Last Sunday it was the turn of Richmond Championship Show. When arriving at the showground, we thought we were lost, as we were being sent to the marque with the Pastoral dogs, where normally we are with the other hound breeds. All was resolved when we saw the German Shepherds were in the ring before us as planned in the Richmond schedule then after a small stake class we were in. As it happened, it was lucky ring 7, as the Saluki BOB won the Hound Group with the BOB German Shephard winning the Pastoral Group then on to BIS. Lucky ring 7 Judging Salukis was hound specialist from Ireland, Marion Finney. DCC, BOB went to Linda Aldous & Jeannette Glaister’s Ch Jay JP Sea Bird El Panjsher JW (IMP) who later won the Hound Group under Di Cook. RDCC went to Cathy Harding & Naomi Cowley’s Ch Classicus Odysseus. For the third week in a row, the BCC, became a champion, namely Denise Garratt & Sharon Oakey’s Caryna Esperanza. She was born on 17 February 2019 and her breeders are her exhibitors. Her sire is Caryna Eris and her dam Ch Caryna Neferti JW. RBCC went to Natasha Hamilton’s Lux Ch Int Ch Alishamar Roxane (IMP BEL) JW. Best Puppy was Freya Wickstead and Mark Cannon’s Caryna Stephano To Abayomi. Best Veteran went to Denise Garratt & Sharon Oakey’s Ch Caryna Neferti JW Sh CM who went on to win Veteran Hound Group 4. Best Special Beginner went to Annette Schafer’s Tin Soldier. Well done all!! A reminder that schedules for the 2023 SGHC Centennial Championship Show are on-line at www.fossedata.co.uk. There are 23 classes for judge Cecilia Anderson to assess. This Year for the first time there will be a Special Open Racing/Lure Coursing Class (Mixed Classes after BIS) This is for Salukis who have participated at licensed lure coursing events and attained at least one license qualification trial run. Some other attractions are the ‘stands’ that will be there on the day including Barley Leads with a stall of beautiful handcrafted leatherwork. Saluki Welfare will have a stall, The Saluki Magazine will be there, Denise Rogers will have a stall present with Gingerberry Jewellery and house collars available and JOS pets will have a stall present with bedding and disinfectants for sale. The Club will have their stand of special Centennial t-shirts, hoodies and mugs for sale. The Club will also host their tradition raffle items. This year we are privileged to have some items donated by the Cooke family in memory of Phyllida. During lunch there will be a Parade of Rescue Salukis which will take a lap around the ring. Eliza Jade Catering will have food available throughout the day and exhibitors can collect free tea and coffee courtesy of the SGHC throughout the day. Not forgetting that all class winners will receive a special Centennial ‘mug’. A few judges have been posted for 2024. Southern Counties will be judged by Dr Ron James, Boston, which appears to have replaced East of England is Clair Boggia and LKA will be Mary Sanders Parker. The SGHC has just posted that they are hoping to get a calendar together for next year, if you would like to submit some pictures of your lovely hounds please send to the secretary, providing we get enough before the October show, we will print & organise for you to vote on the ones you like, We’ll then try to get it printed asap, thank you for your patience Helen Williams 07786936654 Kasaque565@mail.com .

Last Friday City of Birmingham held their Championship Show at Stoneleigh Park. Gone were the old sheds we use to show in, replaced with smart new building. The show was unbenched but there seem to be room to move around. We sat ringside with no problem at all. We even did not have to use our chairs as there adequate one’s there. Schools had not returned after the summer break so it was lovely seeing children there partaking in the activities. There was a very efficient young girl stewarding in our ring alongside her mom. We were second in the ring after a large entry of Beagles, one young boy was busy showing there then being hassled off by his dad to compete in junior handling. Very much in both cases a family activity. Judging Salukis was Graham Hill. DCC, BOB went to Adele Haddon’s Ch Badavie Don Peppino At Ilsham (IMP SWE) with RDCC to Cathy Harding & Naomi Cowley’s Ch Classicus Odysseus At Ashahni. BCC for her third and qualifying CC was our own, Luachmhar Jadira Kasaque. She was born on 30th January 2021 and her breeder is Miss L Phillips. Her sire is Kasaque Shabaz Nefisa and her dam, Ch Virdana Amira S Berega Turi (IMP RUS). RBCC went to Denise Garratt & Sharon Oakey’s Caryna Esperanza. Best Puppy was Mrs Margret Hamilton & Hayley Hamilton’s Caryna Oberon. Best Veteran went of Mrs C Havercroft’s Bermuda Ch Barbey Hector at Dragonsmoon (IMP). Well Done all!! In past notes I have expressed my concerns about the vet practices being purchased by large companies and equity groups. About a year ago I had a shock when I went to our vets only to find they too had sold out to the devil. With these companies taking over I felt the bottom line was the most important issues for the purchasers. In the case of our local vets, the senior partners were maybe ok with the buy outs plus they were being forced to stay unless they could sell the share (at this point it became a part share). It was the middle vets that were in trouble. They had not spent half their lives studying to work on behalf of an equity company. In our case we found a small independent practice to attend. Just to add to this saga, many of the ‘middle’ vets are leaving the old practice and have set up a new independent practice in a purpose build building which will have 24 hour care plus high tech equipment. Back to why I have brought this up is that the following Questionnaire is being circulated. Price fixing is against the law so we hope the law will take action on what is happening in the veterinary practices Questionnaire for Pet Owners Thank you for taking part. This questionnaire should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a review into the veterinary services market for household pets. By household pets we mean small animals such as dogs, cats and rabbits and not large animals such as horses and ponies. Our review will explore whether the market is working well for consumers and for veterinary businesses. As part of its review, we want to hear from pet owners who: • currently own a household pet or have owned one within the last three years; • have paid for veterinary services in the last 3 years; and • would like to tell us about their experiences of buying veterinary treatments and services for their pet(s) The information you provide will help us to understand the experiences of pet owners when buying treatments and services for their pets, as well as business practices in the veterinary sector. Any personal data that you choose to provide to us will be handled in accordance with our obligations under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018. Our personal information charter sets out the standards you can expect from us when we collect, use or share personal data and provides details of your rights in relation to that personal data and how to contact us. We are carrying out this work under section 5 of the Enterprise Act 2002. Further information about this work and how we may use your information can be found on the case page. If you need help completing this questionnaire, please email: vetservicesreview@cma.gov.uk The form can be found on https://cmagovuk.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/ here to edit. It has been a very busy time in the show scene with championship shows nearly every week. Last weekend Driffield Championship Show was held. Judging was Breed Specialist Jayne Pyatt. BCC, BOB for her third and qualifying CC was Diane Layton-Smith’s Velourias Dee Dee Vine. She was born on the 19th February 2021 and her breeder is her owner. Her sire is Elviis Al Noushafarin Velourias and her dam, Ch Velourias Viva Vivienne Sh CM. The RBCC went to Denise Garratt and Sharon Oakey’s Caryna Esperanza. DCC went to Christine Campling’s Ch Classicus Octavius with RDCC to Cathy Harding & Naomi Cowley’s Ch Classicus Odysseus at Ashahni. Best Puppy was Nicola Warner & Diane Layton-Smith’s Kushiel Freespirits Sirrush (IMP USA). Best Veteran went of Jacki & Alan Bloomfield’s Glenoak Laquan ShCEx. Well done all! The last meeting for 2023 for UK Sighthound Sport will be on Sunday 8th October 2023. It is the National Championships which will be held at Stratford Racecourse in Warwickshire. Entries close at midnight on the 24th September. Hopefully we will have a good entry as there are quite a few young Salukis which have now attained their licence. Plans are ahead for a bring and share picnic during lunch time. Schedules for the SGHC October Centennial Championship Show are now available on Fosse Data. If you would like a hard copy of the schedule, Michelle Ulyatt will be bringing some to Richmond Championship Show or she can be contacted to send one out. Those members of the Club that usually receive communications by post, their copy will come as usual. The SGHC is looking for additional committee members. There are big plans for the Club for the future but all these plans can not come to fruition without a full Committee. There is a need for a new Treasurer, a Magazine Editor and ordinary Committee Members. Meetings are held on Zoom so where ever you live, you will be able to attend the meetings. For further information please contact the Club’s secretary. Helen Williams 07786936654 Kasque565@gmail.com The Committee of “The Saluki” The magazine of the SGHC has posted the following: “The Magazine Team have been delighted with the worldwide demand for the 2023 Centenary edition of “The Saluki”. If you are interested in purchasing a magazine please contact: Kathy Webb: kathy.webb99@icloud.com or Ann Shimmin: cranstal31@manx.net As a bonus it comes with an SGHC Centenary keyring gifted by the magazine” Congratulation to Masha Shaverneva and her ever so clever Agiluki (Qazal Sarbaz Har Kala Rachi Awb Aws (IMP BEL) or Altai as he is better known. He has been invited to compete at the semi-finals of a competition that ranks as high as Crufts in the Agility World. Maybe another first for a Saluki. We wish him the best of luck. He will be competing at the Kennel Club large ABC agility stakes which are being held on the 17thSeptember 2023 at Melton Mowbray. Last weekend Welsh Kennel Club held their Championship Show. Late summer bank holiday so the notes are being written earlier then usual. The summer has passed in a flash, which might be down to my age or the fact that we seemed to have lost it around the beginning of July. With all the rain, I must admit that our garden is looking very lush with beautiful green grass; which, because of the abundance of rain is growing, needing cutting daily. The following has been extracted from the SGHC web site: “The Committee is keen to hear your views on what lure coursing opportunities it should offer, how regularly events should take place and in what format. Please complete the Lure Coursing Survey at this link: https://us21.list-manage.com/survey?u=11391d3d61caaeaa846014966&id=f6e6039519 or request a paper copy from the Secretary. The Committee has invested in a lure machine and is working toward offering members’ events. We are now looking for volunteers who would be willing to help with setting up courses and operating the lure. If you would be interested in lending a hand at future practice events or lure coursing meets, please contact the Acting Secretary at secretary@salukiclub.co.uk.” Welsh Kennel Club will be holding their champ show this coming weekend with Age Gjetnes judging with an entry of 19. I do recall that he judged at that show just before lockdown. Interesting lockdown has now become a reference term. Bournemouth Championship Show was held last Saturday. There was no benching but not as crowded as Southern Counties. It very much reminded me of one of the North America dog shows. Perhaps in the future, shows with a small entry need not be benched, but the larger entry shows still must have the benching. Something to think about. Judging Salukis at Bournemouth was Mike Caple. His BOB was Linda Aldous & Jeannette Glaister’s Ch Jay JP Sea Bird El Panjsher (IMP) JW with RDCC to Debbie Copperthwaite’s Ch Al Caliphs Anjal Bey. BCC for her second CC with to Denise Garratt & Sharon Oakey’s Caryna Esperanza with the RBCC to our own Luachmhar Jadira Kasaque. Best Puppy and 4th in the Puppy Group with to Mark Cannon & Freya Wickstead’s Caryna Stephano To Aboyomi. Best Special Beginners and 1st in Special Beginner group was Jarlettes Special Lover owned by Megan Alecock. Well done all A reminder, South East Hound Show entries will be closing at the end of the month. Classes will be sponsored by the SGHC. Just after judging will be the annual picnic. Please let Marie Bryce Smith know your contributions on tel. 01342 327573. here to edit. Many thanks to Mary Sanders Parker for sending in the following write-up about her recent trip to The Saluki World Congress in Sweden: “Saluki European Congress 2023 It was a pleasure and an honour to be asked to contribute as a speaker and as a judge at The Saluki European Congress 2023. The Monday seminars were a font of knowledge for novice and experienced breeders alike and it was fabulous to see so many participants, almost 100, eager to learn and engage. My brief was to talk about the SGHC's 100 centenary and the FCI Saluki breed standard, Wendy Duggan spoke about conformation when breeding for racing/coursing and Dagmar Hintzenberg-Freisleben spoke about the multi functional saluki and her experience as a breeder and how she chooses her puppy. The venue was ideal for the shows with large, spacious rings and plenty of shade for the dogs, exhibitors and spectators around the rings as it was very hot.. The shows took place over two days, and had attracted very large entries, 146 on the first day, and 155 on the second day. The quality of the salukis presented to me was high with depth of quality in all classes; breed type was in abundance and I was often spoiled for choice. BIS Tuesday, which was judged by Wendy Duggan. It was between Ch Sharwassim Fayek Al Shen, a handsome red male who was ultimately BIS, and a beautiful cream bitch Ch Dhawati Aurora Lamiah. Interestingly both had won from the working class. BIS Wednesday, which was judged by Dagmar Hintzenberg-Freisleben was between Ch Al Wathba Fahyim Kenzon Sarii, an elegant grizzle male and Husniya's Barakeh of Barakisch, who was BIS. She wan ultra feminine black and silver smooth bitch. Supreme BIS, which I had the privilege of judging, was the bitch. Both the dog and the bitch fitted the standard well, but I preferred the bitch as she had the most beautiful moderate front, and her movement was a perfect illustration of saluki movement as described in the standard; I could have watched her move all day! I shall be forever grateful for the opportunity to have participated in such a fantastic, well organised event.” Schedules are now available for the Northern Saluki Open Show to be held at Shirland Village Hall, Shirland, Nr Alfreton, Darby. DE55 6BB on Sunday 24th September 2023. Judging will be John Owen. Show opens at 9.30am with judging to commence at 10.30. Following the judging there will be a fun event to raise funds for the Saluki Welfare. Entries can be made on Higham Press or to the show secretary, Ms H Hamilton, Cherry Tree Cottage, High Street, Ulleby, North Lincs DN39 6TG. Tel 01469 588291 Postal Entries Close Saturday 26 August 2023 or online entries close at 12 noon Saturday 9th September 2023. I find it hard to keep up with the amount of shows we have an opportunity to enter. They may be Limited, general Open and Championship Shows with the same going for breed club shows and Group Shows, Congratulations to Higham Press and Fosse data for the hard work they put in, in making our show scene work. To be honest I do not know how they manage it. What a disappointing summer we are having. Whilst June was lovely, weather wise, July has been most disappointing with little sun. Thankfully the temperatures have been moderate, a few days of sunshine would be appreciated. I write this as I look out my window watching the rain. Last Friday, Leeds Championship Show was held. Fortunately, the rain stayed away for us. It has been years since we have attended this show as for some years the Salukis did not have Challenge Certificates plus for us it is a very long trip. Access to the show even first thing in the morning was no problem. Traffic flowed easily. The show was well laid out and we had benches just opposite our appointed ring. In the next ring was Cocker Spaniels, whose exhibitors had redesigned the bench allocations to suit them thus a Leeds Committee member had to return to our area, reassigning the bench allocations. This seems a tend right now as when we attended Windsor, we spent our first half hour looking for our benches. Eventually we too found those as they too had been moved to suit an exhibitor. Judging Salukis was Chris Payne, awarding CCs for the first time. A this point I feel that I must comment about the speed some of the exhibits were shown. As whilst most of the Salukis were shown at a moderate pace a couple were flying around the ring at a great speed. Our standard says: “Gait/movement Smooth, flowing and effortless. Light and lifting showing both reach and drive without hackney action or pounding”. In, order to see the light and lifting action the Salukis need to be exhibited at a moderate speed, not a gallop. I am not criticizing the quality of these dogs but rather hope that this way of presenting our breed does not become the norm. Without doubt this is something that will be emphasized at the SGHC’s upcoming BAD. DCC, BOB was Cathy Harding & Naomi Cowley’s Ch Classicus Odysseus at Ashahni with the RDCC to Gale Scarth’s `Lunar Eclipse Radley Neshama Tova (IMP). Bitch CC went to Mary Sanders Parker’s Classicus Felicitas JW with RBCC & Best Veteran went to Hilary Davies & Christine Harrison ‘s Charrioak Sheerzam JW. Best Puppy was Freya Cannon’s Caryna Stephano to Abayomi. Best Special Beginner was Lynell Zelenka’s Fernlark Belinda Shannie.
While countries around the Mediterranean are boiling hot, we in the UK are not. The Hound Association had to announce that their show would be totally under cover because of rain and high winds predictions. I gather those predictions came true. Judging at the Hound Show was Fran Hanney-Mitchell. Her DCC, BOB went to Linda Aldous &Jeannette Glaister’s Ch Jay Jp Sea Bird El Pansher (IMP) JW with the RDCC & Best Veteran to Debbie Copperthwaite’s Ch Al Caliphs Anjal Bey. BCC, for her 3rd CC was Mary Sanders Parker’s Classicus Felicitas. This bitch has had a great puppy career now in just a few shows is a champion. She was born on 5th January 2022 and her breeder is her owner. Her sire is Ch Classicus Octavius and her dam, Ch Classicus Britannia JW Sh CM. RBCC went to Denise Garratt & Sue Oakey’s Caryna Esperanze. Best Puppy was Caryna Stephano to Abayomi owned by Miss Freya Cannon. Well done all. Schedules are now available for South Eastern Hound Club Premier Open Show which will be held on Sunday 3d September. There is an excellent classification of Saluki classes with Ms Nicola Warner judging. The SGHC is sponsoring rosettes and the Bryce Smith’s are donating £5.00 for BOB and Best Puppy. There are numerous other classes to enter. The event takes place at Hickstead All England Jumping Course, West Sussex BN6 9. Schedules and further information are available on Fossedata. Postal entries close on Monday 7th August and on-line entries until midnight on Sunday 13th August. After the Saluki judging there will be the traditional annual picnic which has always been a highlight of the day. To co-ordinate donations for the picnic please contact Marie on 01342 327573. Last weekend East of England Championship Show was held for the last time. I understand their closure was due to the East of England Agricultural Show no longer Holding their show. What a pity as I remember what fun we use to have at the dog show when it was in conjunction with the agricultural show. We had tickets that allowed us entry, we could wonder around after our judging. The good ole days. There has been quite a lot of development around the showground so I assume they will finish it off with more development. For us, on the western side of the country getting to the show has always been a challenge as the British Formula 1 races are held on the route to the show. Good luck to Boston, who I gather will be taking their date on the calendar. This year’s show was very successful at the new venue of Rutland Show Grounds. Judging at E of E was Mrs Janet Kay. DCC, BOB went to the newly crowned Badavie Don Peppino at Ilsham (IMP SWE), owned by Adele Walton Haddon with RDCC to Caryna Taivoa, owned by the De Souza and H Woodgate partnership . BCC for her second CC went to Mary Parker’s Classicus Felicita with the RBCC to Denise Garratt and Sue Oakey’s Caryna Esperanza. Best Puppy was Al Nafiseh Ivory Pearl owned by Dr Vj Velickaite. Best Veteran went to Adele Walton Haddon’s Ch Amal Hayati Ohdedar El Azizi Fuadi of Ilsham. JW. Well done all. A few weeks ago on social media, there was a discussion on what is the difference between an American Saluki and an English Saluki. This person was concerned because they had taken their Saluki, which came from the UK, to dog shows in the States. The shows they were attending were the general championship shows where one judge may/or could judge the whole Hound Group. Points were offered depending on how many dogs enter. More popular breeds need more dogs to accrue points. Usually, entries, in general are quite small. But he was told his dog was different from the others and if he wanted to succeed, he needed to change his dog to the type that was winning. In reply to the question most people suggested that there was no difference between the American Saluki and the European Saluki. It was also suggested that this individual not bother with the general championship shows but to go to the specialities. The judges at the specialities are ‘breed specialists’ so have a better understanding of our breed.. This got me thinking, with the new systems being implemented by the KC are we going to be seeing more and more non specialist’s judges? Are the breed clubs Going to have less and less influence on who judges us? Reading in this paper I came across an article written by Ronnie Irving. With his permission I am repeating it. He writes “We, certainly seem to be going down the American/FCI route whereby apparently what breeds actually think about who will judge them, is of no interest to the ruling body.” He asks “ Is this a sensible approach” “Entries at shows here may not be great as they used to be. But one thing is clear and that is that in this country breed clubs are still an important part of the dog show and dog breeding scene. Exhibitors in the main still give more support to breed shows than they do to general championship events. Just look at the relevant entry statistics.” |
