Clair Balding , on one of the discussions on the Crufts program brought up the name Xylitol, and the deadly affect it has on dogs.  As it happens we have had visitors from Finland that are familiar with this product because it comes from the birch trees which are quite common to that country.  Xylitol is used as a sweetener in chewing gum and other sweets. If consumed in large quantities it is a laxative.  If one’s dogs consume it, it is deadly and the dog needs to be rushed to the vets for an antidote.  If your dog has consumed some of this product, as a quick first aid they should be given sugar.

Helen Haywood has let me know that she has a few 2019 calendars still available.  If you would like one at the reduced price of £5.00 please email her

Yesterday the Salukis competed at Crufts.  Judging us was Paul Shimmin, who had said this would be his final judging appointment.  He generally had a good entry but most notably was Open Bitch with an entry of 20.   There were 17 dogs from outside of the UK were entered under the Authority To Compete scheme at the Kennel Club. BCC, BOB came from Finland and was owned by Miss Seppa. She is Multi Champion El-Ubaid’s Sincerity Isis.  She was born on 16thSeptember 2011 and her breeder is S. Bruynder.  Her sire is Se|DK Ch El-Ubaid’s Othello and her dam El Ubaid’s Rahma Aisah.  RBCC went to the Quick’s Ch Noushzad Caliana at Jorjenjo (IMP GER).  DCC for his second CC went to Deborah Copperwaite’s Al Caliphs Anjal Bey.  He was home bred out of Khalils Al Caliph (IMP SWE) X Al Caliphs Angelis.  RDCC went to Mrs A Ternest’s Multi Ch Oman Said Ter Dolen .  Best Puppy was Badavie Don Peppino owned by John Walton Haddon.  Best Veteran went to Jeannette & Alan Glaister’s Ch Classicus Cassander JW SHCM.

After the judging there was a great get-together organized by the lovely Caroline Pickering.  A toast was made to the retiring judge and a happy birthday to Denise Garratt.

A raffle for Candy Cane Rescue was organised by Jeannette Glaister at Crufts to which there was a tremendous response from Saluki exhibitors. This charity rescues dogs from the meat trade in China, predominantly Greyhounds but other breeds too.  One  dog, recently looked as if he had Saluki in him. Once rescued the dogs undergo vigorous vet checks and are not released to rescue charities until cleared by the vets.  The results for the raffle were great, Jeannette raised £423 from selling raffle tickets assisted by Mia Freedgard who told everyone they were £5 a ticket.  A very good effort on Mia's part.  Also raised was £60.20 in donations so total of £483.20 sent to  Candy Cane Rescue  on Sunday. Jeannette would like to thank everyone concerned for their generosity in gift and monetary donations.
