Entries have now been posted for Crufts 2023. There are 51 dogs, 50 bitches entered for judge, Jenny Macro. Salukis are being exhibited on Saturday 11th March 2023. Our starting time for judging is 10 a.m. Please remember to purchase your car parking ticket directly from the NEC. After the judging everyone is invited to raise a toast to the SGHC honouring their Centennial year. On 5th March UK Sighthound Sport will be holding their trial’s day. This is for any hound that needs to train and qualify for obtaining their ‘lure coursing license. In order to obtain this license, one’s dog must run alone after the lure. Second and third part is to run with another dog and not interfere with them. There are only two training days a year. For further information please visit the UK Sighthound Sport web site. John Owen has received an interesting communication from Samantha Brierley: “My name is Samantha Brierley and I am a master’s student of Zoology with Animal Behaviour at Bangor University. My current research investigates vocalisation behaviour in the domestic dog, and its potential to vary by breed regardless of individual personality or environment. I am collecting my behavioural data through an owner-directed questionnaire which asks about the typical vocal behaviour of a person’s dog. We ultimately aim to use our findings to reduce the rate of dogs unnecessarily relinquished to shelters due to unmet or violated behavioural expectations. The Saluki is one representative of the ancient breeds, whom are much closer genetically to their ancestor, the grey wolf, than modern European breeds. Unfortunately, since the Saluki is such a rare breed, they are routinely underrepresented or ignored in empirical studies. Often, any data we do have for Salukis cannot be appropriately analysed because there are too few individuals to be considered representative. To derive meaningful results from our samples, they must be large enough for us to consider the sample representative of the general variability in behaviour exhibited by Salukis. We currently only have 1 Saluki in our data! Your participation in our survey will allow us to properly investigate the vocal behaviour of this unique breed and represent them adequately in at least one part of the domestic dog behaviour field. The survey is entirely voluntary and anonymous, and requires approximately 10 minutes to complete. All relevant information is provided on the first page of our survey. Here is the link to the survey: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/thedvqs/ Thank you for taking the time to read this request, and I look forward to analysing the Saluki's vocal behaviour!
