The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club is holding it’s Championship Show on the 29th October 2019 at the Kennel Club Building.  Judging will be Elaine Stanmore (Altaya Salukis).  Postal entries close of the 21st September, on line entries close on the 29th September 2019.  Schedules and on-line entries can be made at fossedata.

The show circus moved to Darlington this weekend.  Judging Salukis was Hound Specialist Graham Hill.  He chose for his BCC, BOB and later Hound Group 4, the Mansell, Duddell & Johnston partnership of Ch Canerikie Catalina with the RBCC to Denise Garratt & Sue Oakey’s Glenoak Lunah From Caryna.  DCC went to Jeannette Glaister’s Ch Vanechka Otis S Berega Turi (IMP RUS) JW Sh CM with RDCC to the Ulyatt’s Fernlark L’Aunisien in Cornhaze Sh CM.  Best Puppy was the De Souza & Woodgate’s Caryna Taivoa.  Best Vetern and 2nd in the Hound Veteran Group was Elaine Sydney’s Multi Ch Daxlore Harani of Sheybani Esp J Ch.

There was an error in last week’s Breed Notes.  The SGHC will be holding their Championship Show on the 20th October, not the 29th.  Entries close on the 29th September.
“The Kennel Club has approved a new official DNA testing scheme for Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) in the Saluki following consultation with the breed’s health coordinator on behalf of the breed clubs.
NCL is a severe inherited disease which causes a gradual degeneration of the nervous system. Signs and symptoms vary widely between the forms but generally include a combination of dementia, vision loss and epilepsy. In Salukis, NCL has been observed with progressive signs of lack of coordination from around one year of age (Appleby et al., 1982).
To find out which laboratories the Kennel Club is able to record results from, and which labs will send results direct to the Kennel Club, please refer to the worldwide DNA testing list at www.thekennelclub.org.uk/worldwide-dna-tests/.
The Kennel Club constantly reviews DNA testing schemes in conjunction with breed clubs to ensure that breeders are supported with resources which help them to make responsible breeding decisions.
The Kennel Club works alongside breed clubs and breed health coordinators in a collaborative effort to improve the health of pedigree dogs and is happy to accommodate a club's request to add a new DNA test to its lists. A formal request from the breed's health coordinator or a majority request from the breed clubs is normally required to do this.
Test results will be added to the dog’s registration details which will trigger the publication of the result in the next available Breed Records Supplement. The result will appear on any new registration certificate issued for the dog and on the registration certificates of any future progeny of the dog, and also on the Health Test Results Finder on the Kennel Club website.  Results for dogs already tested can also be recorded, but owners will need to submit copies of the DNA certificates themselves.
If the owner includes the original registration certificate for the dog (not a copy) then a new registration certificate will be issued, with the DNA result on it, free of charge.  DNA test certificates should be sent to Breeder Services, The Kennel Club, Clarges Street, London W1J 8AB or scanned and emailed to health.results@thekennelclub.org.uk.”

Congratulations to Joanna Engvit (Min Tera Salukis, Norway) Christine Stevens (Crister Salukis, Australia) and Rana Spencer (Etaal Salukis, Australia) who have made their own personal tragedy a blessing for Salukis.  Joanna contacted Dr Frode Lingass (Norway) and his team, worked with them arranging access to a large number of Saluki DNA in storage, including those they thought may have high possibility of carriers.  (The Animal Health Trust had DNA from Salukis which they had been storing for years, at the time of storing it was suggested that the DNA would come in handy but when and how they did not know).  Thanks to them we now have a test that everyone should utilize if planning on breeding a litter of Salukis.  It is a simple test that all you have to do is send a DNA swab to one of the approved labs and get the results.  If by chance your dog is a carrier you must make sure you breed to a clear.  We have seen NCL in the past but it was not before identifiable.  Any questions please get in touch with the Breed Health Co-ordinator John Davies E;Mail address is forcemotors@gmail.com
John has posted that “this is part of the voluntary breeding code approved by the Saluki or Gazelle Hound, Northern Saluki Club and Saluki Welfare.  The cost for this test is very reasonable, about £50.00.  More details can be found at www.northernsalukiclub.co.uk/?page_id=2571.
We are totally indebted to John, our hard working Breed Health Co-ordinator who contacted the Kennel Club, presented all the paperwork, making the Kennel Club accept this test, the first test for NCL in any breed, acceptable to them as part of the KC Health Screening program.

Pawscars voting for 2020 is now open with twelve categories to choose fro.  They are Breed Event, Judge, Championship Show, Open Show, Training Class, Exhibitor, Steward, Writer, Trade Stand, Photographer, Junior and Breeder.  Nomination can be made online via Pawscars website.
The Northern Saluki Club will be holding their Open Show on Sunday 29th September 2019 at Shirland Village Hall, Main Road, Alfreton DE55 6BB.  Judging will be Lesley Fairhall.  She has an entry of 48.  For further information please contact John Owen, Hon Sec. on tel. 0115 9305473 or email: northernsalukiclub@gmail.com
