Long-time Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club member, The Hon. Phyllida Cooke sadly passed away on 18th March 2023. In the beginning of November 2022, she suffered a terrible stroke which left her hospitalized for some months. She was very pleased when she was finally allowed to come home where she passed peacefully.
Phyllida certainly came from blue blood in the world of dogs. Her father, Earl of Northesk was chairman of Windsor Championship Show from 1952 until his death in 1964. Her grandmother and mother were breeders of the Addelstone Borzois.
Hutchinson wrote: ”Mrs Vlasto (Affix “Addleston) is world famous and a great number of leading champions have been bred or shown from this kennel”. I have seen many photos of Mrs Vlasto in the ring with her ‘hat’, which I was always told she always wore when she exhibited her dogs. The old Addlestone kennels are now home to Ryslip Kennels the home of Liz Cartlidge.
I first met Phyllida at the Silver Ring Ascot Race course where an open show was being held. I think it was Reading. She was showing Summers Place Mischief (Dikens) who was sired by Yazid Elan out of Knightellington Larkspur. This must have been around 1979. Phyllida was always a very close friend of Helen Baker (Knightellington) so I assume this is how she acquired him. About two years later she acquired from Cynthia Bossivain-Madigan a bitch, Branwen Nazli. Nazli was born 20th June 1979 sired by Branwen Khamsin out of Knightellington Oleanda. Diken was exhibited in the early days but I do not think I ever saw Nazli.
Phyllida was not that interested in showing her dogs but became deeply involved in the very active coursing section of the SGHC. (She became a member of the Club in July 1979) Her first very successful coursing dog was bred by Brian Pether, the then secretary of the Coursing section. He was Askalom Flyte who was sired by her Summers Place Mischief. She then had a son of his, Glenoak Giaspah out of Ch Glenoak Davande JW. Her last Saluki was Ch Kasaque Lydia. Lydia was both coursed and shown winning in great style with a group placement at Richmond Championship Show.
In 2000, the coursing section of the club was shut down due to some regulation problems. In 2001 Phyllida was appointed coursing secretary of the newly reformed Coursing section. Because of government rules the newly formed coursing sectioned did not hold a meeting until Feb 2002 when they could resume activities. Phyllida remained as coursing secretary until 18th Feb 2005, when the coursing ban arrived.
Phyllida’s death was preceded by her son Adam and her husband Marcus. Our condolences to her son Sebastian, his wife Rachel and their children Henry, Jago and Tallulah. ,
Rest in Peace, our dear friend, we are missing you.
Funeral will be held on Monday, 17th April 1t 11.30 at St Swithun Church. Compton Beachamp. SN6 8NP
Congratulations to Natasha Hamilton and Artimis (LU Ch, Ch Alishamar Roxane JW LC). This past weekend at Schaal Der Kempen International Dog Show Under breed and group judge Norman Deschuymere (BE) won 1st Champions Bitch, excellent. CAC, CACIB, BOB, 1st in Group 10 and Under Best in Show Judge, Leenen Theo (BE) 4th Best in Show. Good luck in winning that final CACIB which will make you an International Champion. I think you will be the first Saluki residing in the UK to win this title.
