Click SALUKI BREEDNOTES WEEKENDING 5TH AUGUST 2022

Last weekend Michael, myself and a group of Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club members, with their Salukis, had the privilege, of representing the Club at The Vowley Falconry Expo.   It was an invitation only event for falconry enthusiast which included members of the Saudi Arabian Royal Family.  As the Saudis were there, they wanted a display of Salukis.  The Salukis all behaved impeccably laying around our designated area ready and waiting for whatever was in store.  One would of thought that was what they did on a regular basis. We were visited, both days by the royals who were most delighted to share their experiences with Salukis in their home country.  One young man asked if we would like to fly to Saudi to join them in Saluki racing.  In the nicest way possible I had to thank him explaining it was not financially viable.

Originally, we were going to have a lure trial but, after a long discussion, it was decided to run two dogs at a time in a straight run.  The trials were to be judged by Cecelia Andersson Operating the lure was done by ‘BullX Training’ with his nifty little machine.  The gentleman that had made the machine was a falconer so his machine was adaptable to be used on the ground, as in lure coursing, or high up in the sky for the falcons.  As much fun as it was to watch the Salukis run, it was equally fun to watch the birds.

Fastest Saluki was Lina Liijeros’s Luva with the second fasted to Zac owned by Mike and Jean Strong.  The end of our two-day visit was concluded by an interview on Arabian television with Cecelia Andersson handing out rosettes to the winners and giving a short speech.  It will not be on Al Jazeera but another smaller station.

The weather for the two days was perfect for running dogs, Vowley is in a beautiful setting with a very up to date conferencing centre.  I look forward to returning again sometime in the near future and would like to thank Nick Fox for inviting us to attend. Also, a thank you to Mike Strong for organizing us.   Let us hope in the near future the SGHC will be organizing lure trials so we can get more dogs qualified.

On the Sunday while we were at Vowley, Leeds Championship Show took place.  Judging Salukis was Mrs Carole Seymore.  It was another great day for the Classicus.  BCC, BOB was Mary Sanders Parker’s Ch Classicus Olympia with the RBCC to Denise Garratt, Sharon Oakey, John & Caroline Owen’s Glenoak Lunah from Caryna.  DCC went to Christine Campling’s Ch Classicus Octavius with RDCC to Nicola Quadling’s Classicus Alron with Malenkhai.  Best Puppy was Mary Sanders Parker’s Classicus Felicitas.  Best Veteran went to Mr A & Mrs M Hudson’s Velourias Agent Velvet Glencathra and Best Special Beginner was Mrs Lynda Ward’s Caryna Manantena at Backtor. Well Done all.

After the main judging at Leeds, Border Counties held their Open Show Congratulations to Rosalie Brady and her Ch Classicus Azim for Bordercot for going Best in Show

Schedules are now available for the Northern Saluki Club Open Show to be held on the 25th September on the Higham Press site.  Judging will be Sharon Littlechild.
