I was delighted to pick up our long-awaited copy of “the Saluki”, the special Centennial issue, at The SGHC Championship Show. I know the editors, Ann Shimmin and Kathy Webb have worked very hard putting together this special issue. I also understand that there was so much effort putting the magazine together that Diana Duckenfield, the design and layout artist needed help from Lorraine Fitzgerald, Lina Hoggren and Kevin Walker-Smith to undertake the advert design. The choice of front cover and back cover were interesting, they were portraits by the very talented Anna Kecskes of Ch Orchard Shahin, who was the first British Saluki to achieve full champion status and his sire, Champion Sarona Kelb is on the back cover. The magazine is packed full of articles, some historical like the 1923 Saluki Standard by Brian Duggan or the interview with some well-known Saluki judges on the KC Saluki standard, in 2023. One of my favourite articles was by Tessa Abbott and the Burydown Inheritance. I could picture Tessa, the storyteller, telling me all about her life. The magazine was embellished with a variety of adverts making history and the future come alive with what is happening in our breed. I always find it interesting to reflect when reading old magazines on what was happening on a very personal level especially on planned litters. In this magazine there were some very clever advert designs. The magazine will be available to pick up at the SGHC October Championship Show or email kathy.webb99@icloud.com or telephone on 01737 353279 for subscriptions and rates In July two Salukis Children’s Books entitled “Saluki Basil” and “Saluki Basil Goes to The Sea” will be available on line. The publishing house that are publishing the Basil series is called Multa Verba Books or http:mvb.si/en? This a story of a Saluki named Basil a beautiful golden- brown dog and his life with people. It describes, in a humorous and evocative way, the habits of dogs and how they experience human habits. This short story for children reminds us of just how interesting life with a pet can be, and how animals’ unique characteristics make life interesting. That’s why we should respect pets and enjoy our moments together, without any expectations about how we should behave. The next book in the series of Saluki called Basil is entitled ‘Saluki Basil Goes To Sea” describes an attractive golden-brown dog and his adventures during his family’s summer vacation. In a humorous and vivid way, it describes a dog’s understanding of his family’s summertime habits when the visit the wonderful Žut Island in Croatia’s Kornati Archipelago. The short story for children shows us how the dog experiences his family’s travels to the island, his boat ride, swimming in the sea, and fishing. The story also shows us how our pets learn empathy. The situations that we find pleasant can be challenging for our pets. They need more time, along with plenty of patience and love. Basil the Saluki had to overcome his fear and immerse himself in an entirely new world. Helen Williams 07786936654 Kasaque565@gmail.com to edit.
