Usually, I post notes on a Sunday but this week is special.  After a most enjoyable
And successful day at the Hound Championship Show and the Saluki or Gazelle
Hound Club Open Show I needed two days rest.  The shows were very busy with
Excellent entries for both.  The Club magazine stand was in attendance.  Poor Janet 
Steel, the editor of the Club’s magazine, was there, in spite of her injury to her knee.
We hope she is able to receive the treatment she needs so she can be pain free.
There was a very good response from exhibitors and visitors regarding items on our
Table.  One new item, with thanks to Anthony Tebbs, son of Ernie & Elsie Tebbs 
Was the ‘coursing slip leads’. We have found three new permanent home for some
Of them.  The promise is they will never find their way into ‘land fill’.  We still have
A few available if you might like further information on them or a photo please contact myself or Janet. 
 We still have Gingerberry design pieces available but as they have stopped trading, when they are gone
they are gone.  During the break between the two shows all lifted a glass in celebration of John and Adele
Walton Haddon's Golden Anniversary. Congratulation to the both of them.  I will post results of the two shows later
in the notes.
 
Christine Harrison has had a very difficult time.  Hilary Davies has sent me a note regarding what has happened.
“ She was hoping to have a long week-end in Malvern staying in her caravan at the same site that
we were staying. on and including a trip to Southern Counties Show and SGHC Champ Show.
 She was travelling down the M5 and was approaching the junction of Worcester, where she would have 
 exited, when she noticed smoke coming out of the engine of her van.  She pulled over on to the hard shoulder
 and as she was taking her seatbelt off, she was contemplating whether  she would be able to unhitch her
 caravan. The next moment flames were licking up the windscreen so she jumped out and 
ran around to the back of the van to get the dogs out. She was struggling to open the tailgate because the caravan was
still hitched up and the jockey wheel was impeding her access, but she managed to open the tailgate about 10". She
then had to persuade the dogs to climb out through a 10" gap which they weren't keen on doing, but did in the end.
By this time the flames were starting to get hold of the van and soon after the caravan went up as well. Meanwhile the
traffic had come to a stop and a passing paramedic stopped to see if Christine was ok and told her to get herself and
the dogs into his ambulance so that they minimized the amount of smoke inhalation. He stayed with her until the fire
brigade took over the collection of what remained of the van and caravan, and took her to a Services where John went
ne piece and Christine would like to encourage people to always travel with a fire extinguisher. It may not put the
fire out but it could just give you a bit more time to get everyone out of the vehicle.
 
At the HoundShow, Christine had been in her classes and thought the dogs would benefit from a little walk.
She went up towards the Margaret Everton Pavilion because there was quite a lot of shade up there.
As she approached the pavilion she was passing a van with the tailgate open and two ridgebacks who suddenly
lunged against the cage front, in the van. This spooked Christine's dogs and as they leapt away, they pulled
Christine over. I think she must have banged the back of her head which caused her eye to rupture and she
also cut her head, arm and wrist. There was a lot of blood because she is on blood thinners. When I got
there the paramedics were doing a good job of patching her up but I was shocked at the amount of damage
especially to her eye. Once the paramedics had stopped the bleeding and bandaged her head John took her
off to Stafford Hospital. They were worried that she had a ruptured artery behind her eye that was maybe
bleeding inside her head so they wanted to do a CT scan which was going to take 2-3 hours so John
returned to the show. After the show finished, we got a call from Christine to say that she needed to be taken
to Stoke University Hospital to the eye clinic. But when we went to collect her from Stafford Hospital they
said she could go home because she was beginning to regain some sight in her injured eye. She has
a hospital appointment later in the week at Stoke when they hope some of the swelling will have gone down.
The dogs were fine, if a little unsettled by what had happened, and a friend of Christine's came to take
them home. I would also like to say that the members of committee who attended and the paramedics
were really helpful and kind.”
 On behalf of Michael and myself we wish her a full recovery.  Also, as accidents usually come in threes,
break an egg in the middle of the kitchen floor.  
 
As many of the previous breeders of Salukis in this country have retired from breeding, people wanting puppies
have found themselves looking abroad for a puppy.  One of the places that they look is
on the internet.  Many of the European counties have
quite stringent rules about the rearing of the puppies, this is especially true of Germany.  I know
the kennel we purchased out last saluki was visited from the registration board to make sure puppies
and their welfare were well looked after.  There are also rules about how often a bitch can be bred from
​ and at what age they no longer can be bred from.  These same rules apply here set by the RKC
 So, if looking to purchase a puppy from abroad please ask around to find out if
they are reputable breeders, same goes for stud dog owner.
 On the SGHC web site there is a list of breeders here in the UK that have puppies available
 All puppies on the site must have had the health testing required by the RKC and be members of the Club. 
 
From the Northern Saluki Club, Maggie Hamilton, the secretary of the Club, will be sending their digital newsletter out in the near future. She asks people to keep an eye out for it as it could go into a span folder.
