21st June 2025 SGHC has posted that Open Show which is being held in conjunction with the Hound Assoc. Championship Show, entries close this week. The committee are pleased the entry is looking good so far. A reminder that we will be having a raffle on the day and Cathy Harding will be selling raffle tickets, items for this raffle will be greatly appreciated. Hopefully with good weather we will be around the Saluki ring. Adele and I are celebrating our Golden Wedding anniversary this year and Houndshow is an opportune time to celebrate it. All are welcome whether a salukiphile or not.' In this week's 'Our Dogs' The Jane Lilley Column is entitled Is this the beginning of the end? I am reprinting an excerpt with permission from Jane as this is a subject that was discussed at the recent SGHC AGM and in Committee of the Club. Jane starts off with: " It is so very sad to realise that no longer do breed clubs have any power whatsoever in the selection of judges other than with their own breed shows. Surely individual clubs are more likely to contain a good selection of those who breed and know the most experienced and dedicated of judges who can guarateed to not only judge to type but then explain clearly in writing why they have made their placings? As it is now, show secretaries can so easily be misled by inviting those who tick boxes as to numbers judged but will attract few entries. After all, would you go under a judge who took on a large good quality entry of a toy breed, with consequently little reason for his placings, walking off for lunch, with his parter, while commenting in a loud voice within clear earshot of a number of exhibitors "I hate this breed"? So, the question is, why judge? Another question: is this the beginning of the end of dog show and the results of hundred of years of breeding and health testingas we still know and appreciate it or are some of the best dogs simply staying at home? Jane goes on to ask "What do you think about the the removal of power from the Breed Clubs?" The future of the dog showing, in this country lies very much now in the hand's of the Royal Kennel Club, here is the UK. Breed clubs, in the case of the Salukis, do offer training, education between the two Clubs, The Northern Saluki Club and the Saluki or Gazelle Hound. It is an opportunity for aspiring judges whether they judge other breeds or just starting up to learn and understand the Saluki. It seems that to qualify to judge breeds, the prospective judges are not now required to attend or prove they are capable of understanding what the standard of each individual breed is, what is a Saluki? In the past the breed clubs would have had the opportunity to asses a prospective judge's readiness to judge our breed. A couple of weeks a go the FCI held their World Show in Bologna, Italy. Pulling judges together for the show must of been very challenging as the FCI has quite a few breeds that we are not familiar with. Breeds that are regional from different countries that have been bred for specific purposes. In the case of the Salukis, we are a well recognised breed with all countries in the World, all using basically the Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club 1923 Standard. The honour of judging the ENCI show in Bologna was Michael Forte from Ireland . He had entry of 44, which was considered a good entry. I have looked up Mr Forte's CV, it said his family had Cocker Spaniels, Rough Collies and German Shepherd Dogs. Over the years he has breed Old English Sheepdogs, Tibetan Spaniels, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Bernese Mountain Dogs. No where in the list was mention of any hound. I would think with the responsibility of judging Salukis, accessing for the future of our breed he attended the recent Group 10 training session in Ireland, where he would of learned the unique characteristics of the breed, a very old breed, not a man made breed, It would be interesting to read his critique regarding his entry but that be impossible as the only go to those competing at FCI Shows. Regarding the judging, Monte Casino (pen name) has written "What is happening to the top line of the Saluki? The top line defines the Saluki just as it does the Afghan,Borzoi, Deerhound and the Whippet. Looking at the results for the recent show in Italy the backline has disappeared because of the method of showing and sometimes one wonders if one is judging the hound or the antics of the handler! In the little booklet prepared for the SGHC and NSC Breed Appreciation Days the hound on the front is Ch Nal Janzi stood naturally of a loose lead and if you look at the dress of the handler and her shoes she certainly could not run out as fast as some of today's handlers so making for bad movement. The judge should have known better but if that is all they get to see all the time the show Saluki becomes the norm. Whether it is the presentation of the handler, or not but it all comes down to approval by the judge. Judges have responsibilities to know and understand the Standards of the breeds they are judging, at the very least. Blackpool Championship Show was held this weekend. A couple of weeks ago I stated 'Be careful of what you wish for" in regards to the cold weather we were enduring. So along came a heat wave with high temperatures which are not usual for this country. We were miserable again so we wished for rain and cool. Well, we are now back in warm rain coats again. Maybe we should modify what we are wishing with , moderately warm, not hot and sunny weather please. The Breed Records Supplements arrived this week. It is the Breed Records Supplement from January to March 2026. My first shock when opening the pages was to see that in this quarter there were zero new registrations for Afghans. Numerically in the past, Afghans have been one of the strongest breeds in the Hound Group. Last year for the first quarter for Salukis there were none. This quarter, we have 2 litter registered , one with 6 puppies and one with 1 puppy. Only one do I recognise the breeders. One importation, May Angel Divina (IMP ITA) She was born on17th March 2025. Judging Salukis was breed specialist Karen Fisher. The entry was marred with absentees, 8. I can only assume the the miserable wet weather and maybe the early start has dampened exhibitors spirit to attend. On the hottest day of the year, there we were, showing our dogs. Fortunately, Bath is a benched show, so there was room for all to remain under under cover. Still it was very hot. In the next ring from us was the Afghans with their big coats, they seemed to be oblivious to the sweltering heat. Judging at Championship level for the first time was Ms Martine Smithson. DCC, BOB was Cathy Harding & Naomi Cowley's Ch Classicus Odysseus at Ashahni with RDCC to Nicola Quadling's Ch Classicus Alron with Malenkhai. BCC went to Mary Sanders Parker's Heart and Soul jp Nashwa Classicus (IMP JPN) JW for her second CC, with RBCC to Chis & Caroline Mackenzie Loughran' s Ch Classicus Ophelia. Best Puppy went to Judith Aryton's Allievo Faa lg Rajiyyah. Best Veteran and winner of Veteran Hound Group 2 went to Kathy Williams' Tigsisle Totally Unique. Best Special beginner was Mr M Measures' Al Hfifa Saluk Amara Clementine. The weather did not cool down for Reading Open Show which was held on Wednesday. There was an entry, on paper, for 4 dogs. Unfortunately due to the heat we decided to stay at home. Jean and Mike Strong did attend the Show Winning BOB with their Xerxes Omar Te Dolen (IMP BEL). Their Veteran Dog. who was entered in Any Variety Veteran did go Best Veteran in Show. Well done to Ch Shahdad Zaki Ter Dolen (IMP BEL). On Friday, 9am it was all go for Salukis. Before I go on further I would like to report that an announcement was made at Southern Counties Show that rumours had circulated about that the Club will be moving. This is incorrect, the show will not be moving from the Newbury Showground. This is good news for exhibitors who have seen championship shows disappear from their vicinity over the last few years. I think the rehoming of LKA has been a great blow to us in the South. Richmond will soon be going to Stoneleigh Park, Certainly better for us than Stafford. Back to the Shows. The SCCS was judged by Kaisa Gold from Finland. I did have a chance to have a few words with her after the judging. She said she was pleased with the quality of her entry. She also said in the near future she hoped to be the owner of a Saluki, her name was on a waiting list. We wish her the best. In the afternoon, after a long wait the Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club Held their Summer Championship Show with Kathy Webb judging. I understand the show was most enjoyable, friendly show. The Saluki Welfare fund was in attendance with their tables and a raffle. I did hear comments that the some people were sorry they could not purchaser items as it was cash only on the day. 'Be careful of what you wish for' earlier this week we had nearly freezing temperatures, four day later we are now nearing 30 degrees C. Tomorrow at Bath Show I hope they have cover for us to hide under I also understand they they are short of water so bringing one's own water is essential. The second AGM of the SGHC was held this week. I am pleased to report that the Limit Show will yet again be held during the lunch break at the October Championship Show. The last couple of years the show has increased it attraction, also an educational show for up and coming judges. Loved seeing the smiles on faces of exhibitors last year. This is a very intensive week if you like dog showing, Monday is Bath, ( entries11 dogs, 14 bitches.)Wednesday is Reading Open Show (4 entries) at the Chievely show ground, Friday SCCS ( entry 20 dogs, 17 bitches starting at 9am with the SGHC Show after. Judging will be Kathy Webb with an entry of 34 making 43 entries. Following on to these shows is 3-Counties with Karen Fisher Judging she has an entry of 14 dogs and 8 bitches. No blob last week as we were fortunate to have our grandson here to visit from the States. We fully enjoyed the activities we had planned to make sure he did not become too bord. He had just finished his exams so had informed us before he arrived that all he wanted to do was sleep. We could not let that happen so dragged him to a craft exhibition at Winchester Cathedral . RHS Wisley, and a local Open Studio event, shopping to take home i.e. tea bags along with a few other events. He did say he enjoyed himself saying he would like to return next year with his partner. That is fine with us. There are still things he needs to fix. Sadly I write that Elaine Hargis Johnston (April 14, 1943 - May 8, 2026) has passed away. She was a very special person, lived life fully and on her own terms. doing what she loved right to the very end. She was happiest surrounded by Salukis, travel and the next adventure. Latterly she was always on her way or returning from a lure course, though I believe she made it up to Canada to show when Gavin Robertson was judging A couple of years ago she planned a trip to UK, Ireland and Sweden for their Saluki World Congress. As she always did, she planned to take a ship to Southampton as she did not fly Unfortunately the trip could not take place as she was not well enough. Sometime planning is the tonic. She leaves behind so many memories, laughs, friendship and lives touch through the community and beyond. Rest in Peace Elaine, we will miss you and your tales . Best Veteran went to Ms J Stenson's Ch Micattura All for Me and Best Special Beginner to Mrs G Dugdale's Gayledale Hurricane of Hera. I messaged Liana on Thursday evening to congratulate her on her CC, BOB. She thanked me for contacting her but said the day ended very badly as once shortlisted Rowan was attacked by a Rhodesian Ridgeback, which was also in the group, who grabbed her throat. She was in the vets for x-ray as possible trachea damage and is absolutely miserable and in lots of pain. I watched the Our Dog team video of the group. You could see poor Rowan on the ground screaming. I often think about our showing dogs on leads that are little more than a piece of string. Thankfully 99.9 % of times we have them under control but, as in this case, the dogs temperament was out of the owner's control. Salukis are strong big dogs but what if they RR had attacked the Whippet behind her. This incident has been reported to the SKC, SKC's vet and the KC officers at the show. In the name of safety we hope this case is looked after speedily and the owner of the RR dog does the responsible thing. We wish Rowan a swift recover both physically and mentally. SKC held a second show but for Salukis it is only classified as an Open Show. Our judge was Murray Armstrong. The first set of these notes seem to be lost in cyberspace somewhere. So if I have forgotten to write something please forgive me. I will try harder to work within the my limits with the computer. On Saturday even 2nd May Christina Ormsby passed away at the grand old age of 102.5. She will be missed. Her memory and wit was with her to the very end. She was always a great ambassador of our breed. Past President of the Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club, exhibitor, breeder and judge of Salukis. I will write a full obituary. Our condolences to her son Jeramy his wife and all the grand children and great grandchildren. She led a very full life. Masha Shaverveva has posted that Judith Ayrton will be judging the South Eastern Hound Club's premier Open Show on September 6th. This year for the first time there will be a Special Racing/Lure Coursing Class. There will be parking next to rings gazebos and picnics encouraged. It is a lovely show run by hound people for hound people The Hound Assoc Schedules are now up and available on Fosse Data. The show listed there for the SGHC is as a Championship Show. Last Thursday WELKS held their championship show with Breed Specialist Carole Seymour judging . Best Puppy was Ruth Dann's Shahdad Genevieve at Jazalle. Well done all!! April 19th 2026 Grim news to all the dog loving fraternity that enjoy participation in EU international activities. The EU has decided that Pet Passports are no longer available for use to pet owners residing in Great Britain. As neither Norway or Switzerland are part of the EU I wonder if they are allowed to keep using their pass ports? Actually it is a kick in the teeth to Le Shuttle, ferries hotels and international activités. Recently we were in Calais (obviously now a wasted trip) where we tried to book tables at a few restaurants. They were closed, opened only on a few days of a week because economically not viable to stay open all week. So all is not well there, I would thought they can use all the business they can get. I am sure that travellers will not be encouraged to travel to the EU within these new restrictions. If one is wondering what the cost of a vet using a Animal Health Certificate is between £99.00 to £250 for a journey with restrictions. Supposedly a system will eventually be place for these forms plus in 2027 the UK is suppose to be going the passport system. One more item that has been shot in the foot by BREXIT. This past weekend has had glorious weather for the UK Sighthound Sports to hold their Spring Championship. There was a good entry of 8 Saluki bitches and 7 Saluki dogs. It was nice to see some new names on the podium as some of the old competitors will soon be retiring. In bitches there were 2 LCCs awarded to Ravensett La Duquesa and Zafaraniyeh Dashte Kavir. In dogs there was also 2 LCCs to Artily Hemingway and Sincerity Kalimantan Cashar. Two new youngsters have qualified for their LCC license. The future look rosy for the sport (I hope). April 12th 2026 South West Hound Club Held their Open Show on the Bank Holiday Monday on the long Easter weekend. Easter weekend except for the Sunday is a hive of activities starting on Good Friday, the Saturday on to Monday. Not only dog shows but sporting activities of every description. Back to the show, judging was Heidi Woodgate, centre stage as the judge. BOB went. to the Strong's Xerxes Omar ter Dolen (IMP BEL) RBOB went to our own Safeera Kasaque AlDjiibaajah (IMP Deu). The show was well run in fantastic venue. On the weekend three members of our Saluki Community travelled to Luxembourg for their 116 117 Luxembourg International Dog Show. Congratulation to Darren and Monique Wunnenberg Thomas for Uuno's wins. He is now a new Luxembourg Champion. Michelle Ulyatt's Jabir where he picked up a Reserve Junior CACL. Next weekend closer to home Jabir will hopefully gain his lure coursing licence with UK Sighthound sport. Natasha Hamilton's Bronte has made her start towards her Luxembourg title with a CACL and a RCACL. This past weekend Hound Association of Scotland held their Championship Show with Maggie Holder judging. As a sign of the times, the entry was low, but across the board apart from the Whippets , none of the other hound breeds entries were over 50. I think there were only 11 Salukis attending. Postal order close on Monday 20th April with on-line entries on Thursday 30th April 2026 As her name is new to me I have looked up Ms Gold's CV : “I grew up with Staffordshire Bull Terriers which were in the family since 1973 and they were my first own breed in 1987. I fell in love with the American Staffordshire Terriers and got my first own one in 1989 and started breeding them in 1997. Until today there are more than 50 home bred Amstaff champions with very limited breeding. Other breeds that I bred are Little Lion Dogs, Jack Russell Terriers and Smooth Fox Terriers. In the family we also have a Boston Terrier, Pomeranian and a Toy Poodle. We are loved at home by Amstaffs and Little Lion Dogs.I still enjoy to show my dogs every now and then, but for the moment I find it very hard to find time for breeding.I am an International FCI judge since 2014 and judged in 32 European countries, USA and Australia. I am an FCI and AKC BIS judge and a judge for FCI groups 2, 3, 4, 9 & 10 and national judge for the groups 5 and 8.” With the costs of everything increasing on what seems like a daily basis I have looked at the costing of exhibiting at a Club show with a general championship show. Elegant bone good feet. Moves really well, if not very enthusiastic. 2. A'sim Sha'rif Al Asmaanii at Barakisch (Imp Che) (Miss C Andersson) Eyecatching, lots to like about this dog, if not very masculine. Excellent proportions and size. Excellent ear placement and expression. Excellent neck of good length. His topline is slightly soft, still has a quite good shape. Would prefer a longer brisket, excellent forechest. His elbows could be tighter to body. On the move he has lots of energy, unfortunately his front movement is too high. This disturbs the overall look on the move. Excellent temperament and muscle condition. 3. Caryna Stephano to Abayomi JW (Mr M, Miss F & Miss D Cannon & Wickstead) Open Dog Highlight of the day. It is very seldom these days to have a open class of 23 Saluki males. A joy to judge, I found all five that I placed to be excellent Salukis, as well as the two that made the cut among all these males. Entries: 24 /Absentees: 1 1. Multi Ch Aziz Yarish (Miss K Hosiawa) What a beautiful Saluki! And what a presence. He is not in the need to impress anybody about his beauty; he is fully aware of it himself. Classical type, proportions and size. Masculine enough head, beautiful oriental expression. Extremely beautiful, long and well set neck. Excellent strong topline, depth of brisket and length of brisket. Beautiful forechest, balanced, excellent angulation front and rear. Long, excellent shaped feet. Excellent tail carriage. There is nothing that does not fulfil my expectations when this dog starts to move. It is all so balanced, effortless. The way he carries himself on a loose lead is exactly how I want it to be in a Saluki. Not too high, nor too low. He never put a foot wrong and looks the same both standing and moving. In excellent condition. CC/BOB and later second in a very strong Hound group. 2. Ch Jay Jp Sea Bird El Panjsher (Imp Jpn) JW (Ms L & Mrs J Aldous & Glaister) Another classical Saluki of top class. I really like his type, proportions and size. Again, head is just enough masculine. In spite that his eyes could be slightly darker, he still has a beautiful expression. Excellent strong topline with excellent depth of brisket. Good forechest, beautiful, elegant bone, excellent feet of good length. Balanced angulation front and rear. I very much appreciate his way of moving, effortless and with excellent stride. He is one of those that you can not push to go faster, he has his one pace. High quality Saluki. Res CC and BV 3. Northern Saluki Club is looking for stewards for their upcoming double show on 19th April 2026. For further information please contact Maggie Hamilton on facebook or through the NSC Website. On 19th of December I wrote an update on the ruling that puppies can not enter the UK until they are 6 months old. (see below). Yesterday, 25th March 2026 I was at the Pet Passport reception area for returning to UK with a dog. Thankfully all our Passport was in order so we sailed through but I did ask the agent what would be the procedure if we had a 5 month old puppy with all correct paperwork. He said the puppy would be allowed admittance to the UK. He was unaware of any changes that had been made to the existing rules. Just an update on the new rulings regarding importation of dogs, not, before 6 months of age. I spoke to DEFRA who advised me to email the ‘Animal & Plant Health Agency’ which is located in Weybridge. Supposedly they would come back with an answer. As no acknowledgement of any sort arrived, I went back to DEFRA, again with my concerns. It seems we have a law which was ratified on 2nd December 2025 but there is no management plan at this time from APHA. So, until a plan has been put together puppies are still allowed to come in as they were. Interestingly, when DEFRA spoke they were a little vague on the rules for breeds that need genetic diversity but did not mention that they have not set up any guidance. 22nd March 2026 With Crufts in mind I had a look at the catalogue for this year's show with entry numbers in mind. Entry numbers at the Club shows, this year were in the 60s. We considered that quite good as general championship shows were much lower. The entry at Crufts this year for Salukis was 93. Going through the list of entries from outside of UK using ATC numbers was 30. So basically 1/3 of the entry was from abroad Last Breed Record Supplement for 2025 has arrived (October to December 2025). In the last quarter there were two litter making 10 puppies registered with the RKC. One litter of 9 with a known affix, the other of one with a not known affix. Three new importation which were also registered as passed on the NCL scheme. When we registered our puppy we too found it necessary to have her retested within the UK testing scheme even though both parents were tested 'clear'. The problem arises with 'registrations' not being accepted by the RKC Health Scheme as they really want the paperwork to come from Labokin, the lab they know. A very disappointing day and probably a milestone for the Club for all the wrong reasons. We were not quorate by one person. We had a full agenda to get through plus accounts to be ratified. Some items on the agenda were from people that insisted they must be there to be voted on. I can understand people of great distance or with families might find Mother's Day difficult to attend but others, no. What happened to the keyboard warriors that insisted face to face AGMs were a must or some people would be disenfranchised? Neither the warriors or the so called disenfranchised were in attendance. So where do we go from here? Items that were not needed to be voted on were discussed at the meeting . There were no new Committee members as no people had put their name up for election. A Project the SGHC have been working on: CHAMPION ALMANZA MAGDIEL Magdiel’s Story by Helen Williams About four years ago the secretary of SGHC, Michelle Ulyatt, received a message, asking if the Club would be interested in semen from an Almanza dog. It seems in the 1980s there was an entrepreneurial veterinarian that had set up a lab where he collected and stored semen from different breeds. Ernie Tebbs, one of the important breeders of that time, was contacted to see if he would allow one of his dogs to contribute to this canine semen bank. The committee asked if anyone was interested in taking up the offer to find further information. Of course, the first question we needed to find out, which Almanza dog? We were all quite excited that the semen may belong to Kafiat, but as we received further information, we found it belonged to Magdiel. Magdiel was a double grandson of Kafiat, with a fantastic pedigree including many of the great dogs of that period, which could be considered a ‘golden era’. I accepted to take up the challenge of what was stored in regards to Almana Saluki with this lab. In the first instance I spoke with the representative of the lab. She explained to me, using Cavalier King Charles Spaniels as an example. In the 80’s Cavaliers were mainly free from a Neurological problem called Syringomyelia. This lab offered the CKCS some of the semen they had in storage from this healthier period. The Club refused it, but the offer was taken up in the States. By using this semen, they managed to produce stock free of this terminal disease. So, what was on offer was the opportunity, if ever needed or wanted, some semen to invigorate our genetic stock. Accepting that the committee of the SGHC would like to maintain this semen was not a short or simple process as the owner of the semen was Ernie Tebbs, or, as he is no longer with us, his legal descendent. Working out who this person was and gaining permission for us to maintain took about four years. Ernie had one son, Anthony, whom I contacted. He told us he was not the legal descendent but his mother Elsie, who was in her 90s and still alive. Elsie, thankfully was very happy to sign over the semen, probably the last thing she could do for Ernie. A contract was made with Elsie giving over the rights and future storage charges to The Club. Than came the legal hold by the Royal Kennel Club, they stated: “ A dog cannot be registered by a club, only an individual or partnership. The ownership of semen is similar and therefore the best thing here would be for the current legal owners of the semen to give written permission for the ownership of the semen to be transferred to a named person - this could be the secretary or another. It would be this named person who would be responsible for signing the AI form as the 'owner' of the semen.” This new information created a problem for the Club as there is no named person that could take responsibility. Following a discussion that was held in Committee, it was decided that the responsibility of the semen would be part of the job of the club secretary. As long as there is a club there would be a secretary. So, how, where and when is up to the Club membership. On this basis we are asking members of the Club for suggestions on the future use of this semen. Breeder: Mr E Tebbs. This has unfortunately been a result of the Committee being faced with having no Show Sub Committee after the AGM – as previously advised in the last Facebook post. Without the skills and experience of a Show Sub Committee, it is impossible to prepare and deliver a show that will meet the quality both members and the RKC expect. Next steps will be for the Committee to evaluate options after the AGM. In the meantime, the Committee would welcome a discussion with anyone who would be prepared to be co-opted to help run shows. Declining entries, parkland ground conditions, unpredictable September weather, and our position in an increasingly congested show calendar made it clear that change was necessary to protect the future of the Society. After consultation with exhibitors and exploring every viable option to remain in the South East, the committee concluded that a more central location, venue and date needed to be sourced. We are therefore pleased to announce that the Richmond Championship Show 2027 will be held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry, on Friday 12th, Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th November 2027. This decision was not taken lightly, but without it the long-term future of the show would have been at risk. Moving to Stoneleigh Park allows us to offer better facilities, more reliable conditions, and a stronger position in the show calendar. We hope you will continue to support the Richmond Dog Show Society as we take this important step forward and look to deliver a sustainable and enjoyable Championship Show for many years to come. In the case of the Committee this is because there were no nominations. This does not mean the Committee will be inquorate, but it raises challenges. As long-standing Committee members are standing down now the increased workload on the remaining members increases. The loss of the Show Sub Committee is a prime example. Options are being evaluated, but losing the skills and experience in that Sub Committee will not be easy to replace. All input into helping formulate a solution is welcome, after all this is your club. David Steel Hon. Crufts entries have now been posted. Salukis are being judged on Friday 6th March at 9am. As usual we are in Hall 5 ring 25. There are 50 males entered with 44 bitches making 94 total dogs. Interestingly in class entries there are 53 males, 49 bitches making 102. That works out to nearly 5 hours of judging. Lots to do on the day, of course, the usual shopping, Discover Dogs, Please contact Anji Jackson Main or David Steel if you would like to help. Janet Steel editor in chief will be manning the stand beside having magazines, she will have Gingerberry jewellery. I believe there will be other breeds besides Salukis available, this year Magazine sales, it would help if you could pre order before the show as the stand is quite small. We plan to deliver pre paid magazines to people's benches when ever possible. Thanks to a note by Jillian Knight Messenger in her Breed Notes mentioning that many of our. judges for 2026 are Afghan judges or have owned Afghans. I have been playing with figures. We have 25 championship judges for this year that have been announced and approved by the RKC. One yet to be approved. Using those figures there are 18 non- breed specialist with the remaining 7 breed specialist. 69% are therefore non breed with 28% breed specialists. Time will tell which side the missing 3% will go. Sunday 1st February 2026 The weather seems to be becoming a little warmer but certainly not dryer. Daffodils are raising their heads in the garden so hopefully spring will not be far off. It is most unfortunate that many of the entries to Westminster will be unable to attend as the temperatures are too low for dogs that will travel on airplanes. Sunday 25th January 2026The Saluki Magazine 2026 Little news available this week. Entries have closed for Crufts so all are waiting to see what they are. I assume they will be published during this week so I will include them in next week's notes. Behind the scenes, work has progressed with the upcoming Saluki Club magazine. Janet Steel, the editor, will have one more year, 2027 with her editorship. In accord with SGHC rules the new editor from 2028 is requested that they work with the on-going editor from 2027. The 'magazine' will have a stand at Crufts where people can pick up their prepaid copies and others can be purchased. We will have a few back copies of the magazine from previous years. This Year again Salukis will be featured at Discover Dogs at Crufts. Anji Jackson Main has posted the following: " One of the objectives of the clubs is to help the public understand just why the breed is so special. To help with that last year Salukis were at Discover Dogs , a part of Crufts …and a lot of people came to the stand to find out more about our remarkable breed and meet the dogs. We want to make sure the breed is represented again this year... but to do that we need to have some helpers – both people and dogs. The challenge will be the days when Salukis are not in the ring Friday 6th March. So, can you do Thursday, Saturday or Sunday ? - maybe ideal if you're not showing but would like to go to Crufts this year with your Saluki! Free passes for people, dogs and car parking for the day will be provided. If enough people can help, we can share the time we spend on the stand with comfort breaks for people and dogs and then you can also have half the day free to explore Crufts with your Saluki. After the judging there was a celebration with cake as it was Sharon Oakey's Birthday. Happy Birthday, Sharon. Judge for Hound Assoc of Scotland has now been posted. It is Maggie Holder We have received a very sad note from Tessa Abbott letting us know of the passing of her husband Tim on the 20th December 2025. Tim was a quietly reserved man with a smile on his face at all times. Tim's parents Lance & Barbara Abbott were well known Saluki enthusiasts in the 1960s. Lance was Secretary of the Coursing section of the SGHC. As it happens Tessa (Hope & David Waters' Daughter) and Tim started their relationship on the coursing field. I suppose their parents insisted that they join them for coursing meetings, not wanting to leave their teenage children at home. So you might say with the marriage of the Abbotts and the Waters, Tim's life has always revolved one way or another with the Saluki Club.
In Tim's business life he was a printer. Until he retired from Trendell's Ltd. his company printed "The Saluki Book of British Champions. Recently we met up with him for a 'listening project' session with Tessa, Chris Ormsby and David Steel. It was interesting listening to them reflecting on the past. Tim related about the deep rivalry between the Abbotts and the Waters. The Abbotts championed the smooth Saluki while the Waters the feathered variety. I would not be surprised to find out that Tessa and Tim may of found this slightly amusing. Tim and Tessa have been fortunate to have have a long and full life. I know until recently they were keen campers, oft travelling Our sympathy goes out to Tessa and their two adult children at this very difficult time. Tim, may you Rest in Peace. Funeral will be family only. CONGRATULATIONS to Darren & Monique Thomas on their Sincerity Kalimantan Cashar (IMP FIN) JW on having a great trip to Belgium. Uuno was a shinning star winning BOB at the Brussels Dog Show 2025 Christmas show but went on to be shortlisted in Group 10.
Just an update on the new rulings regarding importation of dogs, not, before 6 months of age. I spoke to DEFRA who advised me to email the ‘Animal & Plant Health Agency’ which is located in Weybridge. Supposedly they would come back with an answer. As no acknowledgement of any sort arrived, I went back to DEFRA, again with my concerns. It seems we have a law which was ratified on 2nd December 2025 but there is no management plan at this time from APHA. So, until a plan has been put together puppies are still allowed to come in as they were. Interestingly, when DEFRA spoke they were a little vague on the rules for breeds that need genetic diversity but did not mention that they have not set up any guidance. This country is heading back to the years pre 2000 with the enactment Of the ‘Import of Dogs Bill”. It has made its way through Parliament, House of Lords just waiting for Royal Assent. I can not image what was going through the mind of Danny Chambers, a Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament, supposedly a veterinarian when he brough this ‘bill’ to his peers. Truly this was a man that was pulling on heart strings, thinking by making a law for puppies to only be able to enter this country from 6 months, this would stop any illegal importing. I can not verify this by fact but knowing my own personal experience of bringing puppies in, we work very hard to satisfy the spirit and letter of the law, we also know that the earlier the puppies are settled into their new environment, psychologically they have a better chance of integrating positively. What will change regarding animals that are being brought into the UK illegally? Trucks, boats, and planes will be still be bringing them in from unscrupulous breeders where ever they are. The other issue that is included in the act is ear and tail cropping, which is already illegal here. No one is naïve enough to think dogs can be only docked outside of the UK. As far as FCI countries, docking tails has been illegal longer then here. Just to give an example of the new law, you have a five-month-old puppy you want to take on holiday to France. You can take it but you can not return with it for a month. The Royal Kennel Club has shot itself in the foot again. (I will keep to this subject for now). Breeding registrations have gone down, certainly in the case of Salukis. We used to breed but now have reached an age where we do not see ourself out lasting puppies so for our last three puppies we have ‘bought’ puppies. One from France, second one from Scotland and the final one from Germany. Many other breeders have either passed away or decided like us that it is time to call it a day. If we want a new puppy we have been forced to buy from abroad as litters here have been few and far between. These imports have gone through the rigorous procedures of registration with the RKC plus some will form the future of our breed. The RKC has been considered a spokesman for pedigree dogs so why were they not lobbying to the public/MPS the pitfall of this newish law? This law has closed the door for imports so people will be forced to go out to find puppies elsewhere. First place will be internet. We all read about the different breeds on offer on the net. Puppy farmers will be inundated with the lucrative market becoming even larger. My final question is ‘Why was the Royal Kennel Club’ not there doing what should be their job, standing up fighting for the future of our DOGS as lobbyists. |
