Last Friday City of Birmingham held their Championship Show at Stoneleigh Park. Gone were the old sheds we use to show in, replaced with smart new building. The show was unbenched but there seem to be room to move around. We sat ringside with no problem at all. We even did not have to use our chairs as there adequate one’s there. Schools had not returned after the summer break so it was lovely seeing children there partaking in the activities. There was a very efficient young girl stewarding in our ring alongside her mom. We were second in the ring after a large entry of Beagles, one young boy was busy showing there then being hassled off by his dad to compete in junior handling. Very much in both cases a family activity.

In past notes I have expressed my concerns about the vet practices being purchased by large companies and equity groups. About a year ago I had a shock when I went to our vets only to find they too had sold out to the devil. With these companies taking over I felt the bottom line was the most important issues for the purchasers. In the case of our local vets, the senior partners were maybe ok with the buy outs plus they were being forced to stay unless they could sell the share (at this point it became a part share). It was the middle vets that were in trouble. They had not spent half their lives studying to work on behalf of an equity company. In our case we found a small independent practice to attend. Just to add to this saga, many of the ‘middle’ vets are leaving the old practice and have set up a new independent practice in a purpose build building which will have 24 hour care plus high tech equipment.
Back to why I have brought this up is that the following Questionnaire is being circulated. Price fixing is against the law so we hope the law will take action on what is happening in the veterinary practices
Questionnaire for Pet Owners
Thank you for taking part. This questionnaire should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a review into the veterinary services market for household pets. By household pets we mean small animals such as dogs, cats and rabbits and not large animals such as horses and ponies. Our review will explore whether the market is working well for consumers and for veterinary businesses.
As part of its review, we want to hear from pet owners who:
• currently own a household pet or have owned one within the last three years;
• have paid for veterinary services in the last 3 years; and
• would like to tell us about their experiences of buying veterinary treatments and services for their pet(s)
The information you provide will help us to understand the experiences of pet owners when buying treatments and services for their pets, as well as business practices in the veterinary sector.
Any personal data that you choose to provide to us will be handled in accordance with our obligations under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018. Our personal information charter sets out the standards you can expect from us when we collect, use or share personal data and provides details of your rights in relation to that personal data and how to contact us.
We are carrying out this work under section 5 of the Enterprise Act 2002. Further information about this work and how we may use your information can be found on the case page.
