What a disappointing summer we are having. Whilst June was lovely, weather wise, July has been most disappointing with little sun. Thankfully the temperatures have been moderate, a few days of sunshine would be appreciated. I write this as I look out my window watching the rain.
Last Friday, Leeds Championship Show was held. Fortunately, the rain stayed away for us. It has been years since we have attended this show as for some years the Salukis did not have Challenge Certificates plus for us it is a very long trip. Access to the show even first thing in the morning was no problem. Traffic flowed easily. The show was well laid out and we had benches just opposite our appointed ring. In the next ring was Cocker Spaniels, whose exhibitors had redesigned the bench allocations to suit them thus a Leeds Committee member had to return to our area, reassigning the bench allocations. This seems a tend right now as when we attended Windsor, we spent our first half hour looking for our benches. Eventually we too found those as they too had been moved to suit an exhibitor.
Judging Salukis was Chris Payne, awarding CCs for the first time. A this point I feel that I must comment about the speed some of the exhibits were shown. As whilst most of the Salukis were shown at a moderate pace a couple were flying around the ring at a great speed. Our standard says: “Gait/movement Smooth, flowing and effortless. Light and lifting showing both reach and drive without hackney action or pounding”. In, order to see the light and lifting action the Salukis need to be exhibited at a moderate speed, not a gallop. I am not criticizing the quality of these dogs but rather hope that this way of presenting our breed does not become the norm. Without doubt this is something that will be emphasized at the SGHC’s upcoming BAD.
