Many thanks to Mary Sanders Parker for sending in the following write-up about her recent trip to The Saluki World Congress in Sweden: “Saluki European Congress 2023
It was a pleasure and an honour to be asked to contribute as a speaker and as a judge at The Saluki European Congress 2023. The Monday seminars were a font of knowledge for novice and experienced breeders alike and it was fabulous to see so many participants, almost 100, eager to learn and engage.
My brief was to talk about the SGHC's 100 centenary and the FCI Saluki breed standard, Wendy Duggan spoke about conformation when breeding for racing/coursing and Dagmar Hintzenberg-Freisleben spoke about the multi functional saluki and her experience as a breeder and how she chooses her puppy.
The venue was ideal for the shows with large, spacious rings and plenty of shade for the dogs, exhibitors and spectators around the rings as it was very hot.. The shows took place over two days, and had attracted very large entries, 146 on the first day, and 155 on the second day. The quality of the salukis presented to me was high with depth of quality in all classes; breed type was in abundance and I was often spoiled for choice.
BIS Tuesday, which was judged by Wendy Duggan. It was between Ch Sharwassim Fayek Al Shen, a handsome red male who was ultimately BIS, and a beautiful cream bitch Ch Dhawati Aurora Lamiah. Interestingly both had won from the working class.
BIS Wednesday, which was judged by Dagmar Hintzenberg-Freisleben was between Ch Al Wathba Fahyim Kenzon Sarii, an elegant grizzle male and Husniya's Barakeh of Barakisch, who was BIS. She wan ultra feminine black and silver smooth bitch.
Supreme BIS, which I had the privilege of judging, was the bitch. Both the dog and the bitch fitted the standard well, but I preferred the bitch as she had the most beautiful moderate front, and her movement was a perfect illustration of saluki movement as described in the standard; I could have watched her move all day!
I shall be forever grateful for the opportunity to have participated in such a fantastic, well organised event.”

I find it hard to keep up with the amount of shows we have an opportunity to enter. They may be Limited, general Open and Championship Shows with the same going for breed club shows and Group Shows, Congratulations to Higham Press and Fosse data for the hard work they put in, in making our show scene work. To be honest I do not know how they manage it.
